Rev. Willie G. Comer Jr. was born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. After college, he faced financial hardships that led him to serve eight years in the United States Army. After military service, Rev. Comer received his AS Degree from Kennedy-King College, BA Degree from Chicago State University, and MAR and MDIV degrees from Liberty Theological Seminary, where he is currently working on his Doctor of Ministry degree in Urban Ministry.
After teaching elementary and high school, He accepted his call to preach the Gospel message and was licensed to preach the gospel at the Salem Baptist Church of Chicago in June of 1996. After being licensed, he began serving at the Salem Baptist Church of Chicago under the pastoral leadership of Dr. James T. Meeks for nine years.
He served as the Student Ministries Pastor from 2000-2009. Willie was responsible for increasing the Student Worship Service at Salem from
100 to 1450 high school and college students each Sunday. He was instrumental in developing the step ministry, rap ministry, praise and worship ministry, drum-line ministry, and many others that allow students to use their God-given gifts, skills, and talents.
Pastor Comer founded and serves as national president of Zeta Phi Zeta Christian Fraternity and Sorority Incorporated, a nationally recognized collegiate and Christian professional non-profit organization encouraging college students and Christian professionals to impact the world by living out the Word of God.
2009, God called Pastor Comer to leave Salem and plant Berean Covenant Church in Champaign, IL, where he continues to serve as Pastor, launching outreach ministries known as the Community Basketball Campference and the Thanksgiving Day Community Dinner, Community Turkey Bowl Football Game.
In 2014, the board of the East Central Illinois Youth for Christ brought him on as the Executive Director, where he has been instrumental in developing programming to reach youth in the communities of Champaign, Urbana through the City Life Midnight Basketball, Lunch Crew in every middle and high school in Champaign, Parent Life Program currently designed to serves single teenage and young adult fathers.
The City Life Midnight Basketball Program reaches 100 young people every Friday night. The Campus Life Lunch Crew Program currently reaches 500 students weekly.
Pastor Comer also serves as the current Chair of the Human Relations Commission of the City of Champaign.
Rev. Comer shares his passion for ministry with his wife, Zabrina, and their three children. He leaves this quote with all that he comes in contact with,
“Don’t be what you want to be; be everything God called you to be!”
